Bay Discovery Centre Review: Stage 2

This consultation has concluded.

The City of Holdfast Bay has recently completed the first stage of a review of the Bay Discovery Centre, aimed at exploring how Council displays, history, local art and encourages visitors, along with evaluating the Glenelg Town Hall's role as a community hub and civic building.

In the first stage of this project, extensive community consultation was undertaken in August and this feedback was incorporated into a final report, produced by Hudson Howells.  This report identified a number of opportunities to develop the Bay Discovery Centre into a community cultural hub which becomes the 'beacon' of Glenelg.  This report outlined a number possible alternatives for the Town Hall building which maximises the overall value to the community as well as providing an exciting option for showcasing our history.

The next stage of this review is to ascertain the community's views into the proposed elements to be incorporated into the future upgrade of the Bay Discovery Centre. This feedback will inform the further recommendations for the Bay Discovery Centre, as well as be considered as part of the review of Library Services in Holdfast Bay.

This consultation commences Monday 7 November until close of business Monday 28 November 2011.

We look forward to your comments.

This includes the incorporation, display and interpretation of tangible, real history elements that currently sit within the collection at the Holdfast History Centre.

Do you believe the City of Holdfast Bay should be displaying the history of the area and the State? How should the history of Holdfast Bay and the State be displayed? How can we make history more appealing to you?

The current Visitor Information Centre operates from Marina Pier. It is evident that there is a need for visitor information nearer to the Jetty Road/Moseley Square area.

Does the Jetty Road/Moseley Square area require a Visitor Information Centre? Should visitor information be provided from the Town Hall building?

There is currently a gallery space on the ground floor of the Glenelg Town Hall building that is used for regular, changing art exhibitions.

How appealing is it for a gallery space to be available in the centre? What type of art and history displays would you like to see?

There is an opportunity to evaluate the Town Hall's role as a community hub and civic building. This includes the potential for incprporating community facilities and services such as a customer service centre and the opportunity for community meeting rooms or a function facility which can be hired out. In addition there is the opportunity to utilise the first floor space and the mezzanine levels of the Town Hall building for the Glenelg Library.

What are your thoughts about having customer service, the library and/or community meeting rooms included in the Glenelg Town Hall Building?

Café

There is an opportunity to use part of the space for a café that uses local and South Australian produce which allows people within the centre to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The café may be opened up to the inside of the centre and also allow for tables and chairs to spill out onto the foreshore, which will allow for patrons to enjoy the pristine coastline of Glenelg.

How appealing is a café serving local produce? Would it encourage you to visit the centre? Do you think it will add to the vibrancy of the centre?

The Glenelg foreshore currently lacks free entertainment for children and families.

Would you like to see a playground in the Jetty Road/Moseley Square area? Would a playground make you want to visit the area? Would it encourage you to stay longer?

As Glenelg gets a large number of tourists, there is the opportunity to have a shop selling small souvenirs and cellar door facility would allow Glenelg to showcase local South Australian produce and sample the best of South Australia.

What are your thoughts on having a small shop and cellar door facility in the Town Hall building? Do you think it would be of benefit to visitors?
