Brighton Oval: Next Steps

Thank you to everyone who participated in the recent consultation regarding the draft Master Plan for the Brighton Oval complex. We received an overwhelming response with 159 people participating and over 280 comments and 7,052 page views.

Now that consultation has concluded, we are currently in the process of preparing the final report and Master Plan which will include consideration of the comments and concerns expressed by participants. It is anticipated this report will be presented to Council mid February 2012. Following this we will undertake further discussion with the key user groups and the community, prior to finalizing the plan.

A number of key concerns were raised as part of the preliminary feedback and we have provided a brief response to these as below:

Amalgamated Club Rooms

There is a general concern that any new facility would force clubs to share clubrooms including bar and catering facilities. As part of the concept design, it is proposed that any new facility will be designed to ensure clubs maintain their own identity and operations. There is no intended amalgamation or sharing of bar/catering facilities.

Installation of Pokie Machines

We confirm that gaming machines of any kind are not recommended to be included within the plan.

Parking

There is a concern regarding the loss of overall of car parking on the site, which included informal parking bays. The intent of the Master Plan is to formalize car parking to both increase formal spaces and ensure the safety of users within the precinct. Therefore the proposed plan increases formal spaces by 120 spaces, from 68 to 188 parks.

Playground

There is a concern of the location of the playground being adjacent to Brighton Road. The location of the playground will be reconsidered as part of the final plan to a more suitable site within the precinct.

General Community Facilities and Use

During earlier consultations, community access to the site was confirmed as important for the Complex with unstructured recreation being considered a high priority. It is envisaged that the inclusion of community spaces, meeting rooms, fitness equipment, running track and other amenities should be included and will benefit the wider community and clubs alike, while ensuring the clubs' needs are still met.
